A common misconception of women in prostitution is that is a chosen profession. There are many reasons why a woman can get caught up in the sex industry. They may have been sexually abused as a child, ill mental health, homeless, money pressures/poverty, trauma and previous experiences of sexual violence.
Sex workers have described it as “paid rape” and “voluntary slavery”.
What gives the right in our society to sell off our women as objects? There is certainly a double standard where sex is considered between men and women. Males are seen to be highly sexual beings, and are expected to need/want sex, whereas the women who give it to them are seen to be dirty and promiscuous.
